My heart is sad for the Haitians. Sometimes only poets can speak for us in times like these...
Here are a couple of stanzas from our beloved Lucille Clifton:
prayer
lighten up
why is your hand
so heavy
on just poor
me?
answer
this is the stuff i made the heroes
out of
all the saints
and prophets and things
had to come by
this
new bones
we will wear
new bones again.
we will leave
these rainy days.
break out through
another mouth
into sun and honey time.
worlds buzz over us like bees,
we be splendid in new bones.
other people think they know
how long life is
how strong life is
we know.
